CompuCover : Warranty and Insurance products

For many of us, our Macs and iPads are our most used pieces of technology away from our smart phones. In an educational setting, technology is now at the core of the curriculum, enabling teachers and students alike. Unfortunately, some institutions never consider the impact that a faulty, broken or worse, a stolen item, could have on a workflow or on a classroom.

Apple have offered the AppleCare Protection Plan as the over-the-counter product for peace of mind coverage. A standard warranty period is a year from the date of purchase, AppleCare extends that to a total of three years. An additional benefit for those who travel with their device(s), you can use any AppleStore or Apple Authorised Service Provider worldwide if your device requires service while you are away.

Many users, especially those within the educational marketplace, have more diverse or in-depth requirements than a simple warranty extension like AppleCare. For example, the three year plan offered by Apple is often not long enough when the kit purchased is expected to have a service life of 5 years or more. Similarly, if an iPad was to be accidentally damaged, then AppleCare doesn’t currently provide any coverage. This leaves many institutions looking for alternatives.

CompuCover warranty plans on Mac systems can run to 5 years from the date of purchase, and on iPads, up to 4 years. Insurance cover is also available for Macs and iPads for up to 4 years, too. These policies need to be purchased within 30 days (for personal purchases) or inside the first 12 months of ownership for commercial or educationally purchased devices. AppleCare can be purchased at any time in the first 12 months of ownership, though it is worth pointing out, it would still only cover your device for up to 3 years from the original date of purchase of the device.

An additional advantage of CompuCover warranties is CompuCover’s pricing is banded by the value of the product you’re covering. For example, AppleCare for a top-specification 27-inch iMac system with a purchase price £3495, would cost a school £117. If another school were to purchase an entry level iMac 21.5-inch, with a purchase price of £1100, AppleCare would still cost £117 as it does for any iMac, regardless of specification. A 3 year warranty from CompuCover would be priced at £92 for the 27-inch iMac in our example and, only £61 for the 21.5-inch iMac. In some cases, this can almost halve the cost of extra warranty cover.

Worth bearing in mind is the convenience of making a claim. In the event of damage or theft, there is a natural aversion to the dreaded paperwork necessary to resolve the issue. CompuCover have made sure the whole process is as straight-forward as possible. Should your product be stolen or damaged for example, the claims process can be completed traditionally on paper or the details can be entered quickly and easily online. For a claim where a repair isn’t possible (e.g. following theft), the Claims Administrators will instruct KRCS, as an authorised supplier, to arrange replacement. For warranty claims, once we’re instructed, we arrange a courier to pick up at a conveniently agreed time and then arrange the return of your device once all the work on it has been completed.

Unlike many traditional insurance policies, business or personal, in the event that you need to make a claim, there is no excess to pay on a CompuCover policy.

One important note for mobile device cover - All iPads which are covered by a CompuCover policy are required to be protected with an insurance-approved case to help prevent or minimise any damage. We have recently written a blog covering this subject in detail, and we recommend the Griffin Survivor and the STM Dux. These cases meet military standards for drop-protection without hindering the daily use of the iPad itself
