Heading into WWDC 2017

Every year around this time Apple rumours start picking up ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). WWDC tends to be more software orientated rather than hardware but minor updates to existing products are sometimes announced. That, however, doesn’t stop the rumour mill or at least the people atop it. Apple have built quite the cult following and this brings massive amounts of speculation across their entire product line.

Let’s delve into what the Apple-centric corners of the web are expecting this year

iOS11

WWDC has always been more of software dedicated event, meaning a major update to iOS is likely. Here consumers and developers may be able to see updated features for their iPhone and/or iPad. Updates will probably come primarily to Siri, expectations are that it will become more intelligent, with the likes of Google and Amazon all stepping up their game in the virtual assistant sphere. It’s likely that Apple will drop the iPhone 5 and iPad 4 from the update list.

Also, could we finally see a Dark Mode come to iOS like that of the macOS and tvOS version?

watchOS 4

Apple improved Watch and WatchOS with Series 2 and OS3, with no new watch on the horizon it could all be about watchOS4. Further improvements to the core functionality around notifications and fitness seem likely. Announcements of big name applications finally coming to the watch, although I won’t hold my breath for Spotify, just yet.

macOS 10.13

With the new naming structure, what name will Apple go with? The rumour mill has been churning out Californian names beginning with M, with Mojave and Malibu being the front runners. Among the list of potential names, my favourite has to be McCloud. Have a look at this list and let us know your favourite by leaving a comment below.

tvOS 11

The Apple TV has become much more important in the last 3 years with the rise of online streaming. Although updates to the software won’t necessarily be in abundance. Apple will be ready to show off some of their new TV shows, such as Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps with the release of the trailers for these shows but, will there be anymore?

Hardware?

As pointed out earlier WWDC (or Dub-Dub DC as it’s known in developer circles) is principally a software event but, iPad rumours have been circulating since the beginning of the year around a 10.5-inch form factor device. Fitting nicely between the 9.7 and 12.9 inch on the market today.

In past WWDC’s the Mac range has undergone processor and memory updates, not forgetting the Mac Pro release in 2013. Updates could be in the pipeline for WWDC with the MacBook and MacBook Pro rumoured to be receiving the Kaby Lake processor.

An update coming to Mac desktops is frustratingly unlikely but what we are assured of is that Apple has some desktops in the pipeline.

As for the iPhone, it’s probably best to forget about that until September. That being said the iPhone has become the most talked about product from Apple, so there are plenty of rumours.

The rise of social media has certainly aided the rumours, going from the ordinary to the ridiculous, in a very short space of time. However, it’s worth taking the rumours with a pinch of salt. Until Apple announce a certain product, it’s hard to know what to believe. It seems now that the only things guaranteed in life are death, taxes, and Apple rumours.
