Your iPhone and Medical ID might save your life
Do you know that you can store and access emergency contacts and medical information on your iPhone, that can be accessed even when it is locked? A great post from Glyn on our education team.
Should you be involved in an accident or be taken sick, the emergency services or anyone attending you will be able to see if you have medical history that could affect your treatment. Contacts for use in emerency can also be stored here and it can all be accessed even if your iPhone is locked with a passcode. This can be vital in an emergency, help your loved ones in need when they are away from home, or useful if someone finds your lost iPhone.
With iOS 8 onwards and an iPhone 5c or later, you can add your medical information within the Health App.
Medical ID
To make your important health information accessible in case of emergencies, you can personalise your Medical ID on your iPhone.

To add emergency contacts and health information like your birth date, height, and blood type, go to the Health App then tap Medical ID > Edit.
Turn on Show When Locked to make your Medical ID available from the Lock screen. In an emergency, this gives important information to people who want to help, like the emergency contacts you've entered. You can store your Emergency Contacts with information such as Spouse, Father, Brother or Doctor which will be displayed alongside.
Here's how to access Medical ID on a locked iPhone:
Swipe to unlock. Tap Emergency.
Tap Medical ID on the emergency call screen.
All of your Health data is encrypted to your passcode when you lock your iPhone. More information can be found here.
You can save the data stored in your Health app by backing up your iOS device using iCloud. Your data gets encrypted as it goes between iCloud and your device, and while it's stored in iCloud.
If you aren't using iCloud, you can back up your Health data by encrypting your iTunes backup.
