How Apple Intelligence and AI "copilots" combine to save your organisation time, money and improve consistency.

What is Apple Intelligence?

Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal intelligence system, designed to be a natural extension of the Apple software experience. It's deeply integrated into the operating systems of compatible hardware.

It powers many of the latest software features that Apple has released over the last couple of years, including:

• Visual Intelligence
• Enhanced Siri
• Image Playground
• Writing Tools
• Smart notifications with prioritisation
• Priority inbox sorting in Mail

These features improve the user experience and save time daily. With new features announced at WWDC 2025, including Live Translation (which can translate phone conversations in real-time for both participants), there's more functionality on the horizon.

Unlike most artificial intelligence systems available today, Apple Intelligence is built into the device, performing tasks on-device in many instances. This ensures complete data security and user privacy while providing fast request execution. Apple's Foundation Models framework, announced at WWDC, also opens Apple Intelligence's data models to third-party apps for the first time, enabling new local AI possibilities on Apple devices.

Private Cloud Compute

When Apple Intelligence needs to reach Apple's custom servers to process more complex queries, Private Cloud Compute (PCC) extends the security and privacy of Apple devices into the cloud. Personal user data sent to PCC isn't accessible to anyone other than the user — not even to Apple. With servers built using custom Apple silicon and a hardened operating system designed for privacy, using open-source code for third-party inspection, PCC represents advanced security architecture for cloud AI computing at scale.

What does this mean for your organisation? Essentially, complete assurance of data security and user privacy, even when requests cannot be handled on-device.

What are the benefits to my business?

Apple Intelligence offers several key advantages:

• Save time reading large documents by using the 'Summary' feature of Writing Tools in apps like Pages and Microsoft Word, distilling key points into an easily digestible format.
• Effortlessly change the tone of written documents, making them more professional or friendly to better suit their audience without spending hours rewriting. You can also ensure grammar is correct with one click.
• Image Wand creates illustrations from hand-drawn pictures using Apple Pencil on iPad, perfect for embellishing notes with visual detail.
• Image Playground creates royalty-free images based on natural language text requests (e.g. "a sunset vista with cloud-free sky"), perfect for quickly generating professional-looking images.
• Enhanced Siri can understand you better if you stumble over words, and is more capable than ever. You can also type directly to Siri when speaking aloud may not be appropriate.
• Smart Reply for Mail provides one-click access to pre-written replies that understand the context of the message you're responding to, saving time when working through your inbox.
• Priority Notifications place your most important alerts front and centre automatically, with the system learning what matters most to you over time. Never miss a critical message, email or request again.

What about Copilot, Gemini and ChatGPT?

All of these work well on Apple devices, with dedicated apps that can be automatically deployed via an MDM solution. Apple Intelligence works alongside all of them without issue, so you can have access to any and all of the latest apps/models across your Apple devices.

Apple has partnered with OpenAI (ChatGPT's developer) to allow ChatGPT to natively handle certain Apple Intelligence requests at the operating system level, such as composing original text using Writing Tools (you will always be asked to confirm when this happens). You can sign in with your paid ChatGPT account to benefit from unlimited request processing and faster turnarounds for tasks like image generation. The key benefit of the Apple/OpenAI collaboration is that the ChatGPT app isn't required for this integration to work — it's all built-in.

Can I control Apple Intelligence for managed devices?

Yes. Apple offers comprehensive and granular control over what is available on your managed devices in the MDM framework. It's possible, for example, to ensure that any Apple Intelligence requests processed by ChatGPT go through your ChatGPT Team workspace. This ensures organisational visibility and auditing of such requests, as may be required by your corporate IT policy.

Can I run AI models locally on my Mac?

Thanks to the power and energy efficiency of Apple Silicon, Macs provide an excellent solution for running LLMs (Large Language Models, the datasets that generative AI relies on) like Meta Llama and DeepSeek R1 locally. You can expect fast performance with comparatively low energy usage versus a comparable PC system.

Running models locally ensures complete data privacy (as no data leaves the Mac), the fastest speeds for complex or simultaneous requests, and significant monthly cost savings as no cloud AI subscription is required. If your organisation is in a highly-regulated field, such as finance, healthcare or government, or relies on heavy use of AI tools for data processing, then it's worth considering this option.
